Malek gets first-round upset win
Fifth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro was upset in three sets Monday at the Gastein Ladies tennis tournament in Austria.
Suarez Navarro was the only seeded player on Monday’s first-round schedule but she fell to Tatjana Malek 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a tight match. Malek won only four more points than Suarez Navarro over the course of the match but used four service breaks in the third set to get to the second round.
There were only two other matches Monday. Andrea Petkovic topped Sandra Kloesel 6-4, 6-3 in one and Ioana Raluca Olaru rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over Marta Domachowska in the other.
The tournament lost a second seeded player when No. 2-seeded Francesca Schiavone withdrew with a back injury. Shahar Peer was moved into Schiavone’s spot of the draw and given the No 9 seeding.
