Davydenko, Soderling lead Hamburg winners

Nikolay Davydenko and Robin Soderling, the second and third seeds, won their second-round matches Wednesday at the German Open in Hamburg.

The second-seeded Davydenko, a native of Ukraine, cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Germany’s Philipp Petzschner, while Swede Soderling, the surprise French Open runner-up, was a 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 victor over much-improved Italian Fabio Fognini.

Elsewhere, last week’s champion at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, 15th-seeded Jeremy Chardy of France, downed Germany’s Andreas Beck 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6); sixth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain trounced German Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-2; Romania’s Victor Hanescu topped an Hernych of the Czech Republic 6-2 6-3; France’s Julien Benneteau downed seventh-seeded Igor Andreev of Russia 6-4, 6-3; Argentina’s Juan Monaco was leading compatriot Jose Acasuso 6-1, 1-1 when Acasuso retired with a neck injury; and Simon Greul rallied for a 0-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over No. 16 and fellow German Mischa Zverev.
