Olympic champ wins world diving gold

Olympic champion He Chong of China edged American Troy Dumais Thursday to win the 3-meter springboard gold medal at the World Diving Championships.

He won the same event in Beijing last year when Chinese divers thoroughly dominated the Olympics in Beijing, claiming seven of the eight diving gold medals.

There are 10 diving events at the world championships and of the eight contested thus far, China has won five.

He turned in the top score on only two of the six dives, but was consistent enough to pile up 505.20 points. Dumais was fourth with two dives remaining, but rallied to capture the silver medal with a total of 498.40.

The bronze went to Alexandre Despaite of Canada with 490.30 points.

The United States failed to win a diving medal at either the Beijing or Athens Olympics. At these championships, however, American divers have captured three silvers.

China has won four silver and three bronze medals to go with its five golds.

The competition concludes with the women's 3-meter event Friday and the men's 10-meter platform Saturday.
