USA women win in world water polo
Kelly Rulon and Alison Gregorka scored three goals each Thursday to lead the United States past Greece 12-8 at the World Water Polo Championships in Rome.
The American women, who won the silver medal at last year’s Olympics, finished second behind Russia in their four-team group and will enter the knockout round Saturday against China.
Russia defeated the United States 11-10 Tuesday in their round-robin meeting.
Hungary, Australia and Spain won the other three groups. The Netherlands, current Olympic champion, finished second behind Spain in Group D and will meet New Zealand in the opening round of the knockout portion of the tournament.
The China-United States winner will face Spain in the quarterfinals.
The American men’s team will meet Romania Friday to determine the winner of Group D. The winner of that game will earn a bye into the quarterfinals while the loser will likely face either Australia or Serbia Sunday, with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
