Funk’s 65 gives him 6-shot Senior Open win

August 2, 2009

Fred Funk fired a 7-under-par 65 Sunday to win the U.S. Senior Open in Carmel, Ind., by six strokes — his second major title on the Champions Tour.

Funk’s overall score, 20-under 268, broke the open record for most strokes under par.

Joey Sindelar (70) was second at 4-under 274 and Russ Cochran (68) finished third at 276.

Loren Roberts (64) and Greg Norman (73) shared fourth at 277.

The win was Funk’s fifth on the senior tour.

I just tried to keep the pedal to the metal and go down as low as I could get, Funk said.

On a couple of occasions when I got in trouble, I got out of trouble. I had some clutch putts or good wedges in there.

Funk, 53, collected a check for $470,000, the biggest of his Champions Tour career.
