Sharks’ Roenick expected to retire

Veteran center Jeremy Roenick is expected to announce his retirement at a news conference the San Jose Sharks have called for this week.

Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reported Tuesday multiple NHL sources say Roenick will announce Thursday he is concluding his playing career after 20 years in the league.

Roenick, 39, managed just four goals and nine assists in 42 games last season, the worst of his NHL career. He missed more than two months after having shoulder surgery in December.

The Massachusetts native is 36th all-time in goals with 513 and is tied for 39th in scoring with 1,216 points in 1,363 regular-season games for Chicago, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Jose.

The nine-time all-star twice scored 50 goals in a season and is only the third American-born player to reach 500 goals.

In 17 playoff runs, he scored 53 goals in 154 games, but reached the Stanley Cup Finals only once — with Chicago in 1992.
