Porcello, Youkilis suspended five games
Detroit’s Rick Porcello and Boston’s Kevin Youkilis will sit out five games for their bench-clearing, brawl-inciting actions, MLB announced Wednesday.
The two players also were fined undisclosed amounts.
Porcello, a 20-year-old right-hander who is appealing his punishment, was suspended for intentionally throwing pitches
at two Boston players, and Youkilis was cited for charging the mound and throwing his helmet at the pitcher.
The trouble broke out in the second inning of a 7-5 Boston victory at Fenway Park Tuesday. After Youkilis and Porcello clashed and fell to the ground, players raced onto the field from both dugouts and bullpens. Order was soon restored without any punches thrown.
Tensions had risen in the first inning after Red Sox rookie Junichi Tazawa hit the Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera with a pitch.
Youkilis was struck by a pitch for the second straight game and 10th time this season.
Baseball officials also announced that Detroit pitcher Edwin Jackson was fined for aggressive actions
during the incident.
