Mine That Bird works out after surgery
Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird was put through a 6-furlong workout Tuesday, one week after undergoing throat surgery.
Mine That Bird had surgery Aug. 18 for an entrapped epiglottis. The procedure was declared a success.
The 3-year-old gelding covered Tuesday’s 6-furlong workout in 1:14.8, with the half-mile timed at 49.76 and the 5-furlong mark hit in 1:01.8. The workout comes one day ahead of an expected decision from Mine That Bird’s owners about entry into the $1 million Travers Stakes, which is set for Saturday in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
(Dr. James Hunt) is happy with the way he looked today, trainer Chip Woolley said. “He’ll look at it again in the morning and we’ll make a final decision in the morning.
If we irritated his throat today and it looks bad, we won’t run him. “¦ We’re not going to take chances with him. If we see something in there we don’t like, we’re not going to run.
Mine That Bird was a 50-1 long-shot Kentucky Derby winner. The horse has one win in six races this year, collecting purses totaling nearly $1.9 million.
