Federer, Murray top U.S. Open seedings

Roger Federer, who has won the last five U.S. Open men's championships, was installed Tuesday as the No. 1 seed for the 2009 U.S. Open.
Federer extended his U.S. Open winning streak to 34 matches with a victory in the 2008 final against Andy Murray. Since then he has won two major titles -- the French Open and Wimbledon -- and set the record for the most major championships with 15.
The French Open victory allowed Federer to take over the No. 1 spot in the world rankings, which U.S. Open officials use to determine seedings.
After Federer is the No. 2-ranked Murray while Rafael Nadal, who fell from the No. 1 ranking when knee problems limited his play this summer, is seeded third. Novak Djokovic is the No. 4 seed.
The second tier is led by fifth-seeded Andy Roddick with Juan Martin del Potro seeded sixth, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga seventh and Nikolay Davydenko eighth.
The U.S. Open draw is to be revealed Thursday. The tournament's opens play begins Monday in New York with the men's final scheduled for Sept. 13.
