Hedblom is Johnnie Walker champion

August 30, 2009

Swede Peter Hedblom fired a 5-under-par 67 and won the Johnnie Walker Championship in Scotland Sunday, his third title on the European Tour.

Hedblom completed the event at Gleneagles in Perthshire at 13-under 275, winning by a stroke over Martin Erlandsson, also of Sweden, who broke the course record with a 10-under 62 in the final round.

Defending champion Gregory Havret of France (67) and former British Open champion Paul Lawrie (69) tied for third place at 278.

Last week, Hedblom and Lawrie lost to Simon Dyson in a playoff at the KLM Open in the Netherlands.

Hedbloom had the lead entering the final round.

It was so tough, he said. I thought last week was tough. This one was even harder, especially since I had the lead.

Erlandsson carded 10 birdies in his record-breaking round. The previous low at Gleneagles was 63 by Pierre Fulke and Adam Scott.

What a round, Hedblom said. He (Erlandsson) should have won.
