Report: Pole vaulter dies
UC-San Diego pole vaulter Leon Roach has died from injuries suffered in training accident, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.
Roach, 19, a sophomore from Huntington Beach, Calif., was brought to the Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla Thursday in critical condition.
The hospital said he died Saturday night.
An autopsy was planned.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office said Roach, a former pole vaulting phenom at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, missed the padding after making a jump and struck his head while landing on concrete.
He was fourth in the San Diego Collegiate Track and Field Championship in March, the only freshman in the top eight. During his scholastic career, he once vaulted 15 feet, 4 inches.
