Chase Headley had a home run and drove in the eventual winning run with an eighth-inning single Tuesday in San Diego’s 4-3 victory over San Francisco.

Headley broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth with a base hit that scored Adrian Gonzalez from third base. Headley was one of three Padres with home runs in the game.

Kevin Kouzmanoff led off the fourth with a homer to tie the score 2-2 and Will Venable knocked one out in the seventh to make it 3-3.

Aaron Rowand homered for the Giants, who slipped to three games behind Colorado in the National League wild-card race.

Rookie Madison Bumgarner got the start in place of Giants ace Tim Lincecum, who was scratched due to back spasms that had been bothering him for more than a week. Bumgarner, considered one of San Francisco’s more promising pitching prospects, allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four in 5 1/3 innings.

The loss went to Jeremy Affeldt (1-2), who gave up three consecutive base hits in the eighth.

Luke Gregerson (1-3) picked up the win in relief. Heath Bell recorded his 36th save.
