Swiss star Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina scored straight-set victories Sunday, advancing to the championship match of the U.S. Open.

World No. 1 Federer, trying for his sixth straight open title and 16th in a Grand Slam event, hit a between-the-legs winner that set up match point in a hard-fought 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, 7-5 win over Serb Novak Djokovic.

Del Potro, the world’s sixth-ranked player, rolled over former world No. 1 Rafael Nadal of Spain 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

I was so focused every moment because Rafa is such a great player, del Potro said.

The title match will be played Monday.

Federer is 6-0 lifetime against the 20-year-old, 6-foot-6-del Potro, who has won six events on the pro tour.
