Bruins trade leading goal scorer
The Boston Bruins announced Friday they had traded Phil Kessel, their leading goal scorer last season, to Toronto for three draft picks.
Kessel was a restricted free agent with the Bruins, but was unable to agree to a new contract. He reportedly will sign with the Maple Leafs for $27 million over five years.
In 70 games last season, Kessel had 36 goals and 24 assists. He was the fifth player chosen in the 2006 draft.
Boston will receive Toronto’s first-round draft choices in 2010 and 2011 and will also receive a second-round pick in 2010.
Kessel had shoulder surgery during the summer and is not expected to be on the ice until at least November.
