Hantuchova reaches Korea Open quarters
No. 1-seed Daniela Hantuchova sailed through a straight-set win Thursday and into the quarterfinals of the Korea Open tennis tournament in Seoul.
Hantuchova needed just 77 minutes to dispatch Chanelle Scheepers 6-1, 6-1. She won 74 percent of the points on serve and more than half of those when Scheepers served.
Hantuchova moves into Friday’s quarterfinals and a match against Kimiko Date Krumm, who took a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over fifth-seeded Alisa Kleybanova. Krumm’s match took nearly two and a half hours.
Defending Korea Open champion Maria Kirilenko advanced out of the second round when No. 3-seeded Francesca Schiavone retired with a hamstring injury. Kirilenko was ahead 6-1, 1-2 when play was stopped.
Also, seventh-seeded Vera Dushevina stopped Anastasija Sevastova 7-5, 6-1 and earned a Friday quarterfinals slot against Kirilenko.
The other quarterfinals, which were determined Wednesday, have No. 2-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues playing Magdalena Rybarikova and Anna-Lena Groenefeld meeting Yung-Jan Chan.
The tournament continues through Sunday.
