MLB: Kansas City 4, Minnesota 1
Yuniesky Betancourt hit a key three-run homer Sunday, leading the Kansas City Royals’ 4-1 win over Minnesota.
The homer, Betancourt’s sixth this season, gave Kansas City a quick 3-0 lead with one out in the bottom of the second.
Betancourt had three of his team’s six hits and scored on a fourth-inning wild pitch by reliever Jeff Manship to help the Royals avert a three-game sweep.
Winner Zack Greinke (16-8), a possible AL Cy Young contender, yielded a run and seven hits in seven innings with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Closer Joakim Soria hurled two scoreless innings to earn his 29th save.
Minnesota’s run scored on Michael Cuddyer’s groundout in the sixth.
The losing pitcher was starter Francisco Liriano (5-13).
The Twins remain two games back of AL Central-leading Detroit, an 8-4 loser to the White Sox Sunday.
