John Isner blasted 21 aces en route to a first-round win Monday at the $608,500 Thailand Open tennis tournament in Bangkok.

Isner, seeded eighth and ranked 41st, used the big serves to get past wild-card entrant Kittipong Wachiramanowong in the hard-court tournament 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5). The match was even — both players won 97 points — but Isner sneaked through with the tiebreaker win.

Wachiramanowong entered the match ranked No. 585 and was 0-6 on the year in ATP matches.

In the only other main-draw match Monday, Thomaz Bellucci defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

The top seed in Bangkok this week is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who is also the tournament’s defending champion.
