Troicki, Melzer advance in Thailand Open
Viktor Troicki and Jurgen Melzer each claimed victories Wednesday that sent them into the quarterfinals of the $608,500 Thailand Open tennis tournament.
Troicki, seeded No. 4, posted a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Thomaz Bellucci in a match that featured just one service break.
Melzer, the No. 6 seed, needed only 66 minutes for a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Marsel Ilhan in the day’s other second-round match. Melzer lost only nine points over nine service games against Ilhan.
The tournament’s first-round wrapped up Wednesday with Mischa Zverev beating Leonardo Mayer 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 and Kevin Kim defeating Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 6-4.
The second round concludes Thursday with top-seeded and defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga playing Ernests Gulbis in the marquee match.
