MLB: Chi. White Sox 8, Detroit 0

Jake Peavy allowed two hits over eight innings Friday and the Chicago White Sox slowed Detroit's bid for a division title by downing the Tigers 8-0.

The Tigers began the night's action with only a two-game lead over Minnesota in the chase for the American League Central championship and failed to put up a fight against a pitcher who had his second straight outstanding start.

In his final appearance of the season, Peavy (9-6) struck out five and walked two while throwing 105 pitches. He gave up a single to Placido Polanco in the first and a single to Alex Avila in the eighth.

Peavy threw seven scoreless innings Saturday against the Tigers. He has won seven of his last eight starts.

Scott Linebrink came on in the ninth to complete the shutout.

Scott Podsednik hit a solo homer in the first and the White Sox broke the game open with a five-run sixth that featured a two-run double by Mark Kotsay.

The loss went to Edwin Jackson (13-9), who allowed eight runs on seven hits in five-plus innings.
