Rio rocks after OIympic announcement

Brazilians partied into the night Friday after learning Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympics.

Celebrations are nothing new in Rio, but CNN reported Saturday the festivities were impressive even by those standards.

The famed Copacabana beach was packed with thousands of Rio residents celebrating the first Olympics to be held in South America.

It was a fantastic victory. We beat the big cities. Passion talked louder, one man said as a samba band played on stage.

While some critics said Brazil should be focused on the city's chronic social ills instead of sports, other observers said that if fans want to have fun during the Games, Rio is the place to be.

Rio is full of all things quintessentially Brazilian: sun, sand, soccer, samba, sensuality, said Laura Kidder, editorial director of Fodor's Travel. In Rio, it's about taking each day as it comes and living life to the fullest.
