Lithuanian Jasikevicius poised to sign for Pacers
JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Lithuanian guard
Sarunas Jasikevicius is poised to sign a three-year contract
with the NBA’s Indiana Pacers, Israeli media reported Monday.
Israel’s Army Radio said Jasikevicius’s contract was worth
$4 million per season. Reports said the 29-year-old also had
offers from the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Utah Jazz.
The 1.93-meter-tall Jasikevicius has enjoyed success
wherever he has played and in the past three seasons has won
the Euroleague crown, first with Barcelona in 2003 and then
twice with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Born in Kaunas, Jasikevicius played basketball at high
school in Pennsylvania and then at the University of Maryland
between 1994 and 1998. He returned to Lithuania the following
season and played for Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius.
He moved to BC Olimpija Ljubljana before a three-year stint
with Barcelona. Jasikevicius also helped Lithuania win the
European championship in 2003.
Jasikevicius caught the attention of NBA scouts at the
Athens Olympics last year where Lithuania beat the U.S. in the
early rounds of the tournament.
