Anderson homer powers Angels past Yankees

Posted on: Saturday, 30 July 2005, 03:03 CDT

MONTREAL (Reuters) - Garret Anderson belted a two-run homer and Bengie Molina added a solo shot to help the Los Angeles Angels score a 4-1 win over the New York Yankees Friday at Yankee Stadium.

Angels starter Ervin Santana (6-4) held the Yankees to one run on six hits over 6-1/3 solid innings to earn the victory.

Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 25th save as the Angels pulled out of four-game losing skid.

Mike Mussina (10-6) was saddled with the loss, surrendering three runs on eight hits and striking out five without a walk over eight innings.

The Angels showed no lingering affects from an 18-inning marathon loss to the Toronto Blue Jays a day earlier, jumping out to a 3-0 second inning lead on Anderson and Molina homers.

Tino Martinez accounted for the Yankees lone run with a seventh inning solo blast.

In Boston, John Olerud belted a grand slam and Bill Mueller a solo shot to power the Red Sox to an 8-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins for a third straight win.

Bronson Arroyo (9-6) provided Boston with 7-1/3 solid innings to earn the win, yielding three runs on five hits with one walk and no strikeouts.

Settling into his temporary role as a closer, Curt Schilling came on in the ninth to register the final two out and his fourth save.

GRAND SLAM

Clinging to a 4-3 lead, Boston put the game out of reach in the eighth inning when Olerud hit J.C. Romero over the wall in deep right for his eighth career grand slam.

Joe Mauer and Jacque Jones homered for the Twins.

Twins outfielder Torii Hunter suffered a strained left ankle after crashing into the wall chasing down a fly ball.

In Baltimore, Paul Konerko cracked a three-run homer and Carl Everett added a solo shot as the Chicago White Sox clipped the Orioles 7-2.

Orlando Hernandez (8-3) gave up two runs on seven innings, striking out three without a walk to earn the win.

Tied 1-1, the White Sox took control of the game in the third when Konerko homered to deep left bringing across Everett and Tadahito Iguchi for a 4-1 lead.

Erik Bedard (5-3) took the loss giving up four runs -- three earned -- in five innings.

In Toronto, Gary Matthews junior homered and Kevin Mench Michael Young each had a pair of hits and an RBI to lead the Texas Rangers to 4-1 win over the weary Blue Jays.

Coming off an 18-inning marathon Thursday, the Blue Jays lacked energy as the Rangers coasted to their third straight win.

HITLESS RELIEF

Doug Brocail (4-2) worked 2-1/3 innings of hitless relief to earn the win while Francisco Cordero came on in the ninth to retire the side and notch his 25th save.

Corey Koskie drove in the lone run for the Blue Jays, who managed just six hits after the longest game in franchise history.

In St Petersburg, Aubrey Huff homered and drove in four runs as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3.

Casey Fossum (6-8) turned in a solid effort on the mound for the Devil Rays taking a shutout into the eighth inning before running into trouble finishing with the win after surrendering two runs on six hits in 7-1/3 innings.

Danys Baez came on in the ninth to get the final three outs and his 20th save.

In Seattle, Victor Martinez smacked a three-run homer and Grady Sizemore and Jason Dubois added a solo shot to lead the Cleveland Indians to 10-5 win over the Mariners.

Kevin Millwood (5-9) took credit for the win allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out three over six innings.

Aaron Sele (6-12) was tagged with the loss, shelling for nine runs on 12 hits in just four innings.

In Oakland, Mark Ellis belted a three-run homer and Rich Harden provided 5-1/3 gritty innings to lift the surging Athletics to a ninth victory in 10 games by downing the Detroit Tigers 8-4.

Harden (9-4) struggled, giving up four runs on 12 hit but held on to take the win striking out four and walking two.
