Schilling returns to form as Red Sox blast Yankees 9-2

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Curt Schilling, back on the mound and in prime post-season form, delivered eight sparkling innings as the Boston Red Sox pounded the New York Yankees 9-2 on Saturday in a top-of-the-table American League east clash.
The last time Schilling stood on the mound at Yankee Stadium was Game 6 of last year's AL championship series, collecting the key win as blood seeped through the sock of his injured ankle.
There was no blood on Sunday but plenty of guts as the Red Sox ace turned in his best performance of an injury-hit season.
He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking a pair as Boston extended their lead at the top of the standings to four games over New York.
Struggling to return to his all-star form after off-season surgery on his ankle and an uneven stint as the team's closer, Schilling (6-7) returned to the rotation late last month and finally collected his first win as a starter since April 18.
The big right-hander got plenty of early support as Manny Ramirez staked the Red Sox to a 2-0 first inning lead with his 34th homer of the season, taking Shawn Chacon over the wall in deep left.
The Red Sox put the game out of reach with a six-run burst in the fourth sparked by a John Olerud solo shot.
Ramirez finished with three RBIs while Trot Nixon drove in a pair of runs and Tony Graffanino had three hits and scored once.
Jason Giambi got the Yankees on the board in the fourth with his 28th homer of the season, but that was as close as New York got as their archrivals traded runs in the eight inning to close out the scoring.
In Chicago, Garret Anderson belted a three-run homer and Steve Finley and Chone Figgins each added a solo shot to power the Los Angeles Angels to a 10-5 victory over the White Sox, their third straight win.
