Clijsters takes first set of women’s US final

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fourth seed Kim Clijsters won the
first set 6-3 against Mary Pierce in the women's final at the
U.S. Open on Saturday.

The Belgian, who has lost all four of her previous grand
slam finals, broke 12th seed Pierce in the opening game when
the Frenchwoman netted a backhand.

Clijsters held serve comfortably and games stayed on serve
until the fifth game, when Pierce sent a forehand wide to hand
the Belgian a 4-1 lead.

The Belgian's first double-fault gave Pierce one of the
breaks back but Clijsters broke again in the ninth game to take
the set.
