Calif. gov. vetoes bill banning Redskins team name

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed on Thursday a bill that would have banned public schools from using "Redskins" as a sports team name because it is racist.
"Administrative decisions regarding athletic team names, nicknames or mascots should be retained at the local level," Schwarzenegger said in his written veto statement.
The Republican governor vetoed a similar bill last year. At least five California public high schools have teams named the Redskins.
The National Football League franchise in Washington carries the Redskins name. But some U.S. universities have changed team names that could be viewed as derogatory to American Indians.
Stanford University in California changed its team name from Indians to Cardinal in the early 1970s, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association is trying to impose a ban on the use of American Indian mascots, logos and nicknames by university sports teams.
