Former NFL back Timmy Smith faces drug charges

DENVER (Reuters) - Former NFL running back Timmy Smith, who holds a Super Bowl rushing record, was arrested on Friday after selling cocaine to an undercover agent, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said.

As agents moved in with guns drawn, Smith, 41, fled in a sport utility vehicle, but he was caught 20 minutes later by police, supervisory agent Jeff Walsh told reporters.

Smith, a former Washington Redskins running back, is best remembered for rushing for a record 204 yards in the 1988 Super Bowl in a 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos.

More recently, Smith has worked as a security guard at a juvenile correctional facility in the Denver area.

Jeffrey Sweetin, DEA special agent in charge of the Rocky Mountain Division, said Smith had been under investigation since April and had sold cocaine with an estimated street value of $37,000 to undercover officers in the Denver area on seven occasions.

About $100,000 in assets and 1,300 grams (46 ounces) of cocaine were seized from Smith and his brother Chris Smith, 35, he said.

The pair are expected to be in federal court on Monday. If convicted, they face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a minimum of 10 years in prison, Sweetin said.

On Friday, Timmy Smith sold half a kilogram (1.1 pounds) of cocaine to an undercover agent in a Denver-area restaurant parking lot, Sweetin said. Chris Smith, about two blocks away, provided it to his brother minutes before and was arrested without incident, he said.

Timmy Smith had no previous drug-related arrests.
