NEW YORK (Reuters) – Donovan McNabb was placed on the
injured reserve list on Tuesday, bringing the Philadelphia
Eagles Pro Bowl quarterback’s turbulent season to an early end.

McNabb, who has been troubled by a hernia most of the
season, would have surgery sometime next week, coach Andy Reid
said, adding that the recovery time was eight to 10 weeks.

A five-time Pro Bowler, McNabb has passed for 2,507 yards,
16 touchdowns and nine interceptions this season.

Philadelphia’s All Pro cornerback Lito Sheppard joined
McNabb on the injured reserve list after suffering a badly
sprained ankle during the Eagles’ 27-17 loss to the New York
Giants on Sunday.

With McNabb set for surgery and the controversy surrounding
suspended wide receiver Terrell Owens still up in the air, the
4-6 Eagles are unlikely to make a return trip to the Super
Bowl.

Philadelphia were beaten 24-21 by the New England Patriots
in last season’s NFL championship game.

Prior to his injury, McNabb had been the target of
criticism by Owens that contributed to the receiver’s four game
suspension.
