Watanabe replaces injured Hale in US team

SAUZE D’OULX, Italy (Reuters) – Graham Watanabe will
replace Jayson Hale in the U.S. men’s snowboard cross team
after Hale was ruled out with a knee injury, team officials
said on Wednesday.
Hale tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee
after a training accident on Tuesday and is unable to compete.
Snowboard cross, which makes its Olympic debut with the
men’s competition at Bardonecchia on Thursday, involves riders
racing side-by side down a steep course with jumps. Injuries
are common place.
