Finland shutout Italy 6-0

February 16, 2006

TURIN (Reuters) – Teemu Selanne scored a pair of goals as
Finland recorded their second shutout in as many days at the
Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament with 6-0 win over Italy on
Thursday.

The Finns, who whipped Switzerland 5-0 on Wednesday, were
held scoreless in the first period by the Italians, who were
being backed by another raucous crowd at the Palasport
Olimpico.

But an undisciplined second period by the plucky hosts put
an end to any upset hopes as Jere Lehtinen, Saku Koivu, Jussi
Jokinen, Ville Peltonen blasted powerplay goals past Gunther
Hell to put the Finns in command 4-0.

Selanne, a right wing for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, would
add another power play tally in the third period before closing
out the scoring with the game’s only even strength goal.

Netminder Fredrik Norrena made 16 saves for Finland.
