UN, NY team, hedge fund chiefs attack malaria
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The United Nations, the New York
Knicks basketball team and hedge fund executives announced on
Tuesday a global “Dunk Malaria” campaign to combat the deadly
The organizers (http://www.dunkmalaria.org/) are asking
sports fans, students and others around the world to dunk a
ball through a hoop of any kind to get people thinking about
malaria and help raise some of the hundreds of millions of
dollars needed annually to save lives.
As many as 3 million people a year die from the parasitic
disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Some 90 percent of victims
are under 5 and most of them live in Africa.
