STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The goalie from the Swedish women's silver medal-winning Olympic team has pulled out of Wednesday's men's game between Malmo Redhawks and Bofors because her American college team will not allow her to play.
Kim Martin, 19, would have made history as the first woman from the country to take part in a senior men's league game by playing for the Redhawks in the second division tie.
Her Minnesota college team had previously said she could appear in the match but changed their mind, fearing that Martin might lose her amateur status as the Redhawks players are professionals.
"We have received a message from Kim's college where they take full responsibility for providing us and Kim with the wrong information," the Redhawks said in a statement on their website.
Martin, who would not have received any money had she played, was the heroine in Sweden's semi-final win in Turin over the U.S saving 37 of 39 shots.
She then stonewalled four American shooters in the penalty shootout, taking Sweden to the final where Canada proved too strong.
