NEW YORK (Reuters) - Curt Schilling came a step closer to his 200th career win as the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 9-5 in the opener of their three-game American League series on Monday in Boston.
Schilling (7-2) allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks over eight strong innings, earning his 199th win and helping the Red Sox improve to 4-1 over the Yankees this season.
Manny Ramirez homered and drove in three runs and David Ortiz also had three RBI as the Red Sox opened up a 9-1 lead before the Yankees hit two homers and scored four runs off Keith Foulke in the ninth inning.
Boston now lead the AL East by 2 games over the Yankees.
Schilling told reporters after the game that the New York injury situation had made it easier for him.
"This is a team that has been wracked with some real significant injuries," Schilling said.
"I'm sure things will be different when those players get back in the lineup."
Johnny Damon, who was the designated hitter because of a foot injury that kept him playing the outfield, opened the scoring for the Yankees with an RBI single off Schilling in the third.
But that was it for the Yankees until the ninth inning, with the Red Sox scoring four runs in the third, three more in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 9-1 lead.
"This ball club, even though we're that far behind, they're still going to go up there and take their whacks," New York manager Joe Torre told reporters.
Ortiz had a two-run single and Ramirez followed with a two-run homer to put Boston up 4-1 off New York starter and loser Chien-Ming Wang.
FRANK'S RETURN
The Red Sox chased Wang with three runs in the seventh and added a pair off Colter Bean, making just his third Major League appearance, in the eighth.
New York scored four runs on five hits off Foulke in the ninth, with Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada both hitting home runs and Bernie Williams adding an RBI double.
Alex Cora had three hits, drove in a run and scored another for the Sox, while Ramirez, Ortiz and Mark Loretta all had two of Boston's 12 hits.
Wang (4-2) allowed seven runs on nine hits in six-plus innings, striking out one and walking one to lose for the first time since April 21.
In Chicago, Frank Thomas hit a pair of home runs in his return to Chicago but the White Sox rallied to beat the Oakland Athletics 5-4 in 10 innings.
Thomas hit solo home runs in the first and fifth innings to help the A's take a 4-0 lead, but the Sox rallied and eventually won on a bunt single by Pablo Ozuna in the bottom of the 10th inning that scored the winning run.
Jermaine Dye and Rob Mackowiak homered for the Sox in the eighth inning. Bobby Jenks (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings for relief for the win.
Jim Thome, Ozuna and Mackowiak all had two hits for the White Sox.
Ron Flores (0-1), the sixth Oakland pitcher, took the loss in relief. Mark Kotsay and Thomas both had three hits for the A's.
