PARIS (Reuters) – Defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne
won the first set 6-4 against Russian eighth seed Svetlana
Kuznetsova in the French Open final on Saturday.

The Belgian, seeded fifth, wrapped it when Kuznetsova
netted a forehand after 50 minutes.

Henin-Hardenne, who also won the tournament in 2003, broke
in the first game with a forehand winner on her second chance.

She then held serve before breaking again in the fifth when
the 2004 U.S. Open champion double-faulted to open a 4-1 lead.

Kuznetsova closed the gap when she benefited from
Henin-Hardenne’s second double fault in the sixth game.

But the Russian was unable to get back on level terms and
Henin-Hardenne pumped her fists after securing the set.
