Pisani overtime goal keeps Oilers’ Stanley Cup dreams alive

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Reuters) – Fernando Pisani scored
a shorthanded goal 3:31 into overtime to give the Edmonton
Oilers a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes and keep their
Stanley Cup hopes alive on Wednesday.

With the Cup in the RBC Center and the champagne on ice,
the Oilers spoiled the Hurricanes’ party, sending the
best-of-seven Stanley Cup final back to Edmonton for Game Six
on Saturday.

The Hurricanes still lead the series 3-2 but could not put
away the feisty Oilers, who are bidding to become just the
second team after the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs to erase a 3-1
deficit since the best-of-seven format was introduced in 1939.

Pisani, who scored the game’s first goal just 16 seconds
into the opening period, notched the last when he picked off a
pass in the neutral zone, broke in alone on Cam Ward and beat
the Carolina netminder to the top corner.

Ales Hemsky and Michael Peca also counted for the Oilers.

Eric Staal scored twice for the Hurricanes and Ray Whitney
also found the back of the net.
