NEW YORK (Reuters) - Pitcher Randy Johnson of the New York Yankees was suspended for five games by Major League Baseball on Thursday for intentionally throwing at Eduardo Perez of the Cleveland Indians in an American League game Wednesday night.
New York manager Joe Torre was also suspended as a result of the incident, which occurred during the seventh inning of the Yankees 6-1 win at Yankee Stadium after both teams had been warned.
Johnson and Torre were also both fined undisclosed amounts. The Yankees pitcher is expected to appeal his suspension while there is no appeal process for Torre, who will serve his suspension Friday when the Yankees play Washington in an interleague game.
Johnson is expected to make his next start Monday in Philadelphia before his appeal is heard.
Both teams were warned in the sixth inning of the game after Cleveland pitcher Jason Johnson hit New York catcher Jorge Posada with a pitch, leading to an exchange of words between the two players.
In the next inning, Johnson threw way inside on his first pitch to Perez. The Indians player pointed toward the mound, both benches emptied but no punches were thrown.
