Switzerland and Ukraine go into extra time
June 26, 2006
COLOGNE (Reuters) – Switzerland and Ukraine went into extra
time at 0-0 on Monday in an evenly balanced World Cup second
round match.
Both teams hit the crossbar in the first half. Ukraine’s
Andriy Shevchenko glanced a downward header which bounced up
against the bar in the 21st minute.
Three minutes later Swiss striker Alex Frei rattled the bar
at the other end with a powerful free kick.
The eventual winners, after extra time or a subsequent
penalty shootout, will play Italy in the quarter-finals in
Hamburg on Friday.
