Germany and Italy 0-0 at halftime

July 4, 2006

DORTMUND (Reuters) – Hosts Germany and Italy were drawing
0-0 at halftime in a pulsating, high-tempo World Cup semi-final
on Tuesday.

Italy applied the early pressure but Germany had a penalty
appeal waved away when the ball appeared to strike Andrea
Pirlo’s arm as Germany captain Michael Ballack pushed forward
midway through the half.

The best early chance fell to Italy midfielder Simone
Perrotta, put through by Francesco Totti’s defence-splitting
pass, but he was unable to beat Jens Lehmann with his shot in
the 16th minute.

Striker Lukas Podolski skied a volley but the hosts’ best
chance was squandered when Miroslav Klose unselfishly passed on
the break for Bernd Schneider, who sent a rasping shot over the
crossbar after 34 minutes.
