LYTHAM (Reuters) – Latest from the second round at the
women’s British Open at Royal Lytham & St Anne’s on Friday:
* American Juli Inkster added a 72 to her opening 66 to set
the halfway target of six-under-par 138. The 46-year-old led by
four shots from England’s 2004 champion Karen Stupples (69) and
Taiwan’s Candie Kung (70).
* Inkster was near perfection in her opening six-under-par
round; Friday’s was more of a grind. “I wasn’t confident with
my driver but very happy with the way I got it round,” she
said.
* Inkster had three birdies and three bogeys and made a
great par-four save at the last, getting up and down from 80
yards after hooking her first two shots.
* World No.1 Annika Sorenstam shot a 71 for a one-under-par
141 after an uncharacteristically up and down day. The 2003
champion had five birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey six at
the eighth. She is aiming for her 11th career major.
* When England’s Karen Stupples won at Sunningdale in 2004,
she opened her last round 64 with an eagle/albatross; she holed
out with a five iron at the second.
* She holed out with a pitching wedge from 113-yards for an
eagle two at the 16th. “It’s the longest shot I’ve holed since
Sunningdale,” she said.
