NetLogic Microsystems' NL5512 Utilized in Hitachi's Gigabit Router and Switch Family Supporting IPv6 and 10G Ethernet
NetLogic Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:NETL), a leader in the design and development of knowledge-based processors, and Hitachi Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), a leading global electronics company, today announced that NetLogic Microsystems' NL5512 knowledge-based processors are incorporated into Hitachi's GR4000 and GS4000 gigabit router and switch families that support IPv6 and 10G Ethernet.
"Hitachi's gigabit router and switch family supporting IPv6 and 10G Ethernet offers customers superior levels of speed, performance, configuration, flexibility and hardware-based QoS. These capabilities combine to enable handling of mission-critical IP/Ethernet networks effortlessly and reliably, even in environmentally challenging and high-traffic environments," stated Hiroyuki Wada, general manager, Information Communications Group, Global IP Network Systems Division, Hitachi. "NetLogic Microsystems' NL5512 is capable of processing multiple pipelines simultaneously, each at speeds of 266 million decisions per second. In addition, the NL5512 processor has a cascaded design for connecting multiple processors that support millions of records. These features are critical for the processing of packets under the new IPv6 standard."
"We are pleased to be working with Hitachi on its GR4000 and GS4000 family of gigabit routers and switches," said Ron Jankov, president and CEO of NetLogic Microsystems. "Our knowledge-based processors feature an advanced superscalar design architecture that allows for concurrent processing on multiple pipelines. Concurrent processing enables multiple layer-4 decisions to be made simultaneously including quality of service decisions, access control decisions for security and low latency forwarding for voice and video packets. This significantly increases performance and provides the ability to process IPv6 packets at 10 gigabit wire-speed."
By providing efficient and rapid decision-making in the processing of packets, NetLogic Microsystems' NL5512 processor uses information contained in multiple logical databases that store packet classification rules and/or IP addresses. Its primary applications are for packet classification, policy enforcement, state-based routing, packet forwarding, MPLS searches, MAC address searches and/or QoS enforcement for differentiated services in Core, Edge, Metro and Enterprise networking.
With the ability to process multiple pipelines simultaneously, the NL5512 supports a higher level of classification and filtering without adversely affecting bandwidth. Additionally, the support for 576-bit wide records allows for maximum inspection of incoming packets that is necessary in order to support IPv6 traffic.
The NL5512 is in volume production today.
