Maine Launches Enhanced Official State Web Site

Posted on: Wednesday, 25 July 2007, 15:22 CDT

Governor John E. Baldacci is pleased to announce the launch of the newly enhanced Maine State Web site (http://www.Maine.gov). The award-winning Web site has new features to improve citizen and business access to government information, including a mapping function, translation to French and Spanish and a contact directory.

"Maine.gov continues to excel in providing online access to government information in a way that is easy to use, saving time for Maine citizens and businesses," Governor Baldacci commented. "The new enhancements to Maine.gov have greatly improved the state's Web site, resulting in a significant value to the citizens of Maine."

The upgrades to Maine.gov were made with the focus of offering convenience and ease of use, while providing frequently requested features for Maine constituents.

"Our commitment to providing high quality and useful online services is unwavering and evidenced by our ongoing enhancements to Maine.gov," explained Richard Thompson, the state's chief information officer.

Maine.gov now includes interactive online maps of key government offices and locations, including polling places, Health and Human Services offices, Motor Vehicle offices, career centers, courthouses, public libraries, state parks and town offices. This service provides options for street-level and satellite views of each location, as well as driving directions.

Another feature is the enhanced Maine.gov state agency contact directory. This directory is now a one-stop resource for all state agency contact information including agency Web site links, phone and TTY numbers, addresses and descriptions of agency duties.

Maine.gov continues to emphasize accessibility and usability. The Web site meets federal and industry standards for accessibility to the disabled, and it now offers instant language translation of Maine.gov Web pages into French and Spanish.

In addition to these new features, Maine.gov provides access to more than 350 online government services, including vehicle registration renewal, professional license renewal, hunting and fishing licenses, traffic ticket payments, business tax registration and more. Other popular features of Maine.gov include seasonal photo contests, a mobile device portal, news, citizen alerts and weather.

Maine.gov offers a friendly help center with tips, a powerful search engine, live chat support and answers to frequently asked questions. Beginner and experienced Internet users alike will find the site easy to navigate.

The Maine.gov Web site has been recognized nationally for excellence several times in recent years, including ranking second in the nation in the 2006 competition for best state government Web portal by the Center for Digital Government.
