AT&T Awards the Georgia Aquarium a $25,000 Grant to Expand Educational Outreach Programs

Posted on: Friday, 27 July 2007, 09:05 CDT

ATLANTA, July 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. today awarded a $25,000 educational grant to the Georgia Aquarium that allows members from the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta to attend the aquarium free of charge and to take part in specially designed education programs.

The grant was presented in conjunction with the July meeting of the AT&T board of directors, which is being held in Atlanta today.

"We are pleased to partner with the aquarium and to help introduce young people to the concepts of natural resources conservation, aquatic animal care and ocean studies," said Randall Stephenson, chairman and CEO of AT&T. "We support many education programs, and it is especially rewarding to be able to bring the students into an aquatic habitat of this caliber, where a firsthand experience can make a lasting impression in their lives."

The Georgia Aquarium, a nonprofit organization, opened in 2005. Approximately 50,000 students each year take part in the aquarium's educational programs, which are tailored to each grade level and include interactive opportunities and animal encounters. It is the only aquarium integrated with a veterinary teaching hospital.

"We hope every person who comes through our doors will leave with expanded knowledge, whether it is about a favorite fish or a greater appreciation for protecting the environment," said Jeffery Swanagan, the Georgia Aquarium's president and executive director.

The aquarium's education programs correlate to the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) and are approved by the Georgia Department of Education. With more than 3.6 million visitors in its first year, the Georgia Aquarium is one of the state's premier tourist attractions. "The Georgia Aquarium is valuable to the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia as an economic driver and teaching facility," said Sylvia Anderson, president of AT&T Georgia. "We are pleased to help expand the reach of this community asset."
