Aug. 6--TOKYO--Microsoft Co., the Japan arm of Microsoft Corp., said Wednesday five of Japan's major computer makers will start selling personal computers (PCs) equipped with the Japanese version of the Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system in the fall.
The five are Fujitsu Ltd., Hitachi Ltd., NEC Corp., Sotec Co., and Toshiba Corp.
The English and Korean versions of the new system were made available last October in the United States, Canada and South Korea.
The system enables users to watch live and recorded television programs, to record TV programs, and manage music, video and photo collections of their own choosing. It also contains the features of the current Windows XP Professional operating system, such as enabling Internet browsing, communicating with friends, and watching DVDs.
The system allows users to access all this content by operating a single remote control handset, apart from the conventional method of using a keyboard or mouse.
Microsoft will team up with Nikkan Henshu Center Ltd., a provider of electronic TV program guides, to offer users a free TV guide, it said.
