Nokia Siemens Networks Joins Linux Foundation

Telecoms equipment joint venture Nokia Siemens Networks has announced that it is joining the Linux Foundation to work on the non-profit organization’s Carrier Grade Linux development project.

Formed from the merger of Siemens Communications and Nokia Enterprise Solutions in April this year, NSN will bring its fixed-mobile convergence expertise to the Carrier Grade Linux project, particularly in the areas of User Plane and Control Plane Network Elements, as well as embedded applications.

It is hoped that this will lead to greater integration between the mobile and carrier grade Linux specification and the Linux Standards Base, increasing interoperability between Linux distributions for mobile devices and networking equipment.

The Linux Foundation was formed by the January merger of Open Source Development Labs and the Free Standards Group and is responsible for the Linux Standards Base, as well as the Data Center Linux, Carrier Grade Linux, and Desktop Linux workgroups, and the Mobile Linux Initiative.

NSN’s parent companies Nokia and Siemens are already members. Siemens joined the OSDL in late 2005 while Nokia joined the merged entity in April.
