Montefiore Medical Center Takes Advantage of Lightpath's Optical Transport Services for Network of the Future, Now

Bronx-based Hospital Using Expanded Bandwidth to Power Computer Physician Order Entry and Picture Archiving & Communication Systems

Lightpath(R), the business telecommunications services division of Cablevision Systems Corporation, today announced that Montefiore Medical Center has deployed Lightpath's Optical Transport Services to support its advanced healthcare applications.

Montefiore Medical Center is upgrading its network from an OC-48 SONET ring to Gigabit Ethernet, taking advantage of Lightpath's dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) core optical network backbone. The new Gigabit Ethernet network links the hospital's Bronx-based Moses Division, Medical Park and Weiler/Einstein Division facilities to its data center in Yonkers, which houses more than 300 application servers.

"The success of this ambitious upgrade is a reflection of Lightpath's ability to quickly react to our constantly changing needs," said Brian Hoch, Director of Computing Resources, Montefiore Medical Center. "Lightpath's reliable optical network, proactive customer support and ten-year relationship with our hospital made them the obvious choice to support the critical exchange of data between our main facilities. In upgrading to Gigabit Ethernet, our bandwidth has quadrupled while costs have remained virtually unchanged."

The WAN network upgrade enables Montefiore Medical Center to move to 100 percent Computer Physician Order Entry (CPOE), which will eliminate the need for paper-based bedside charts. Physicians can now order tests and medicine, and communicate with the hospital staff through an online portal that is supported by the Lightpath network. A Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) has also been implemented, enabling storage and distribution of digital medical images that can be retrieved remotely or transmitted over the network.

"Montefiore's aggressive rollout of Lightpath's Optical Transport Services demonstrates the hospital's commitment to using advanced telecommunications and Internet technologies to provide the very best in healthcare services to its patients," said Phil DeCabia, senior vice president, Lightpath. "Montefiore is an extremely dynamic institution and we're eager to continue expanding our relationship with the hospital as they explore advanced capabilities that utilize our state-of-the-art network infrastructure."
