Fujitsu Microelectronics America Delivers a Series of High-Performance ASICs To Foundry Networks

Posted on: Tuesday, 9 September 2003, 06:00 CDT

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) has delivered three generations of ASICs to Foundry Networks, Inc. , the industry's leading networking supplier, for several families of networking products. The ASICs are the result of the ongoing collaboration between the two organizations.

These high-performance, multi-million-gate ASICs include up to 7Mbits of embedded SRAM, and are packaged in high pin count BGAs. Also, with evolving standards and requirements, Fujitsu's embedded array solutions provided a quick turnaround time. This enabled Foundry Networks to introduce new features such as JetScope(TM), as well as to conform to the emerging 10Gbps Ethernet standards, well ahead of all its competitors.

To complement the award-winning JetCore(TM) architecture, Foundry required a supplier with world-class capabilities in technology, design methodology and manufacturing to meet challenging time-to-market requirements. "Fujitsu has proven itself a world-class semiconductor manufacturer able to meet Foundry's aggressive initial production ramp-up cycles. The ability of Fujitsu to produce thousands of parts to support initial product rollout has been unsurpassed," said Richard Bridges, Foundry Networks' vice president of operations.

Fujitsu's design methodology ensures first-silicon success by integrating proprietary point tools with the most popular industry-standard CAD tools. Fujitsu supports co-simulation, emulation and high-level floor planning to ease estimation of the design's power, timing and size. This enables the designer to make effective architectural-level decisions to achieve optimal design solutions.

Fujitsu's advanced design methodology supports cycle-based simulators and formal verification, as well as static timing analysis and the more conventional VHDL and Verilog simulators. Fujitsu's design-for-test capabilities include boundary scan (JTAG), full and partial scans, as well as built-in self-test memory. These capabilities provide its design partners with the industry's best tools and facilities for creating the products they need to meet their customers' time-to-market demands.

"Fujitsu has been an outstanding partner and technology supplier to Foundry Networks, delivering leading-edge, high-performance ASICs that are at the core of our networking systems," said Karl Triebes, CTO and vice president of platform systems for Foundry Networks. "Having a dependable ASIC supplier that can meet our silicon needs on time increases our competitiveness in the high-end networking sector. We look forward to continuing this strategically important partnership."

"Foundry Networks has proven its leadership in the networking industry since its inception and throughout the challenging environment of the past years," said Keith Horn, vice president of marketing of Fujitsu Microelectronics. "This outstanding organization delivers exceptional solutions to customers as diverse as Yahoo and LucasFilms, and this new set of enterprise networking systems continues their impressive leadership.

"Fujitsu has extensive experience supporting this type of highly complex design for major customers," Horn continued. "Both the Fujitsu and Foundry design teams are getting stronger through consecutive project experience. This is an ideal situation for both parties."
