Sabeus Photonics Awarded $1.3M NAVSEA Contract for the Development of High Strength Fiber Optic Sensor Arrays

Posted on: Tuesday, 16 November 2004, 09:00 CST

Sabeus Photonics, a developer of fiber optic sensing technology for military surveillance applications, announced today that it was awarded a $1.3 million development contract by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) to develop a new high strength fiber sensor array used for sonar systems on US Navy nuclear submarines.

The NAVSEA contract, which was finalized in September, comes on the heels of two previous US Navy development contracts valued at approximately $400,000 and awarded to Sabeus earlier this year by Penn State Applied Research Laboratory's Electro-Optics Center in Kittanning, PA.

"We are very pleased to have been recognized by NAVSEA for our breakthrough patented fiber optic technology," said Andre de Fusco, president & CEO. "We look forward to making it possible for the Navy to deploy a new generation of sonar systems for a fraction of the cost of existing technology."

In August 2003, Sabeus established an R&D and advanced manufacturing facility in Freeport, Pennsylvania with the mission to develop next generation fiber optic sensors for military and commercial applications. Since its opening, the facility has undergone three expansions to accommodate the awarded contract work.

"We are pursuing program opportunities for developing optical fiber sensing systems for aircraft, ships, submarines and perimeter security systems," commented Jim Andersen, Sabeus Vice President and General Manager of the Freeport operation. "As Sabeus continues to develop ground breaking technology and gain momentum with its customers, we are enthusiastic about our prospects for growth in Freeport and the 12th District."

About Sabeus

Sabeus manufactures rugged fiber optic sensor systems to measure pressure, temperature, seismic and acoustic data on land and in marine/subsea environments. Sabeus sensors are used for oilfield reservoir monitoring, and pipeline integrity monitoring and leak detection. Sabeus is a licensed government contractor and supplies military surveillance products including embedded perimeter security and intrusion detection systems, fiber optic array sub-systems for towed or hull-mounted applications and ocean bottom cable arrays for harbor defense and other littoral surveillance applications.

Sabeus, founded in 1998, has offices in Chatsworth, CA, Houston, TX, Freeport, PA and Calgary, AB, Canada. Sabeus is ISO and Telcordia certified and is privately funded.
