Ellacoya Introduces the E30 Next Generation Service Control Switch for Delivering IP Services

Posted on: Tuesday, 16 November 2004, 09:00 CST

Ellacoya and ARRIS (Nasdaq: ARRS) strengthen partnership with OEM agreement

Ellacoya Networks(TM), Inc., a leading provider of intelligent bandwidth management solutions for broadband networks, today announced the general availability of the e30 Switch, the newest addition to its IP Service Control System(TM) family of products. The e30, already deployed at leading broadband operators worldwide, builds on the capabilities of Ellacoya's 16000 Switch, quadrupling capacity, putting forth new ease-of-use features, and adding new functionality to simplify the delivery of triple-play IP services. With Ellacoya's Service Logic Software(TM) (SLS), it is the industry's only service control platform that scales to support system-wide management of all switches from a central point.

Ellacoya also announced today an OEM agreement with ARRIS, a leading provider of complete voice and data solutions for broadband service providers. The agreement strengthens the existing partnership between the two companies to include worldwide distribution and support of the e30, and the entire Ellacoya product line, under the ARRIS brand.

"We are pleased to expand our relationship with Ellacoya to provide additional ARRIS solutions that enable our customers to evolve their business models to include delivering new revenue-generating IP services," said Jeff Brooks, Senior Director of Product Line Management at ARRIS. "The e30 adds more scale and higher performance to a system rich with functionality for managing bandwidth dynamically, an increasingly important function as the wave of new applications on the network continues to grow."

The e30 Switch is a high performance, high capacity platform that performs deep packet inspection (DPI) on network traffic to identify and manage applications based on application signatures in the data flows. The Ellacoya switches offer the unique ability to configure new application signatures into the switch in real-time to classify new applications at the earliest possible opportunity.

Together with Ellacoya's Service Logic Software (SLS), the system enables broadband service providers to: gain unprecedented visibility into network traffic usage; manage network traffic to ensure service levels are guaranteed; and roll out new services such as Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and multimedia services, with dynamic quality of service (QoS) on a per-subscriber and per-application basis. Ellacoya's unique system architecture integrates with third party provisioning systems and back office OSS systems through a central open API provided by the SLS servers. It allows the network to be automatically expanded by simply adding e30 switches to the network as the subscriber base grows without making changes to the OSS while at that same time significantly minimizing OpEx costs when compared to alternative systems.

The e30 employs a new custom DPI Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to deliver 4 Gbps of wire speed traffic processing with full deep packet inspection capabilities. The e30 is a carrier-grade system with configurable N+1 redundancy groups, as well as support for automatic passive optical bypass for protection in the event of a power failure.

The e30, and all Ellacoya Switches, support software plug-in modules that add functionality to the base switching system. The Network Intrusion Manager (NIM) module is integrated with Sourcefire's best-in-class intrusion detection system (IDS) for detecting and preventing network attacks. The Multimedia Service Manager (MSM) module is a PacketCable(TM) Multimedia-based Application Manager which enables the delivery of multimedia services over the cable broadband network with dynamic QoS in both in-line and off-line network placements.

"ARRIS is the ideal partner for us, with its proven success and expertise in building next generation IP-based networks for its customers. We have already deployed our joint solutions successfully in broadband networks around the world and look forward to an even closer working relationship beginning with the branding of the new e30," said Ben Legault, VP of Marketing at Ellacoya Networks. "The e30 is the culmination of feedback from customers who not only have growing subscriber bases, but also need to manage, protect, and generate revenue from their networks without requiring costly upgrades to their network infrastructures."

The e30 is shipping and deployed in several large broadband service provider networks in North America, Europe and Asia.

Ellacoya Software Version 5.5

Also announced today is the availability of Ellacoya's embedded software, version 5.5 which runs on all Ellacoya Switch platforms. The new software adds functionality to the system that enables better control through new rate limiting capabilities, MPLS awareness, and new ease-of-use functionality to simplify network-wide reporting, service creation and configuration.
