NEW YORK and FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- C.A.C. Media, a leading provider of Linux-embedded middleware and applications for next generation broadband-connected consumer electronics devices, and Video Without Boundaries, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: VDWB) , a pioneer in the emerging broadband media device market, announced the appointment of Nathaniel (Nat) S. Brown as C.A.C.'s Chief Technology Officer. Brown joins the company following a 10-year leadership role at Microsoft and after serving as an advisor on various businesses and intellectual property issues with consumer electronic software firms and startups. He has worked extensively with Linux/uClinux on embedded ARM and non-x86 systems. C.A.C. Media is a privately held company with Video Without Boundaries its largest institutional investor.
At Microsoft, Brown played a central role spreading Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM) as a programming strategy and application programming interface throughout Microsoft and to the industry. In 1997, Brown initiated the evolution from COM to Microsoft's current .NET/CLR architecture. Microsoft's Xbox game console product and game software strategy was incubated and initiated by Brown and a group of four cohorts who saw the potential for PC hardware to make a competitive console for PC developers to write quality titles more quickly and for Microsoft to compete with Sony for the digital living room.
Brown takes over as CTO from co-founder Warren Melnick, who will now head up C.A.C.'s Research and Development team responsible for MCSS 3.0 compatibility with emerging silicon and hardware reference designs.
"As a visionary in both software strategy and digital entertainment hardware platforms for Microsoft, Nat is a great asset to the company scaling C.A.C. Media's operating system and digital entertainment platform to be the dominant player in the connected device marketplace," said Ken Nelson, CEO, C.A.C. Media. "We are also very excited to execute Nat's vision of leveraging our technology and services to the open-source community to foster new innovative applications and technologies for the digital home."
In addition to leading C.A.C.'s corporate expansion in the Seattle and Northern California markets, Brown will also be responsible for leading strategic initiatives to expand MCSS compatibility with new ARM-based hardware platforms and expanding C.A.C.'s Content Delivery Network to support cross-platform devices and Digital Rights Management standards.
"C.A.C.'s MCSS platform and content delivery network creates a business model which offers unique value to OEMs, programmers, and content providers big and small," said Nat Brown. "As a long-time Linux user and programmer, I am thrilled to come out of the Windows closet and join C.A.C.'s effort to keep the digital home open and interoperable - to put a tux on every TV!"
C.A.C. Media's MCSS platform and content delivery network will be deployed by Video Without Boundaries (BULLETIN BOARD: VDWB) on their MediaREADY(TM) products and will deliver DVD quality video content to MediaREADY-enabled TVs over the Internet. The network will support a wide range of content including Channel Programming (Subscription Video on Demand, Video on Demand, and Library Subscription Video on Demand).
