Aussie Accused of Pirating ‘Simpsons’ Film
D’oh! A Sydney man faces criminal charges after he allegedly uploaded The Simpsons Movie to the Internet — the first person in the world to do so.
Australian Federal Police said they raided the man’s home Thursday in relation to allegations of criminal breaches of intellectual property law, the Sydney Daily Telegraph reported.
The man, using video-capable mobile phone, purportedly uploaded a copy of the animated movie to a U.S. global streaming service hours before the movie debuted stateside on July 27.
He allegedly used a video phone to surreptitiously record the movie before uploading it to the site, where it was viewed or downloaded more than 3,000 times, the newspaper said.
The Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft said piracy investigators found the footage and had it removed within two hours, but not before it had been transferred to other sites.
