Aug. 18–A five-alarm fire destroyed the sanctuary of an Oak Cliff church late Friday night, Dallas Fire-Rescue officials said.

The blaze began around 10:20 p.m. at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church in the 1800 block of West Davis Street.

Officials were not sure how the blaze started but said heavy layers of roofing material made it difficult to get the fire under control.

Neighbors and members of the church gathered at the site of the fire throughout the night to watch and pray.

“We are people of hope and people of prayer and people of strong faith,” the Rev. Ed Paredes said. “The church will be rebuilt.”

The church was founded in 1933 and plans to celebrate its 75th anniversary next year.

WFAA-TV contributed information to this report.
